Meeting through Free Online Dating

Free Dating Site

Through best intentions your best friend has determined that she needs to help you with your social life so she sets you up with a blind date. She says that this is better than meeting someone on a free online dating site. Not even someone that she knows and you reluctantly but foolishly accept. You have made it through the introductions. You are sitting in a Chinese restaurant and you intensely dislike Chinese food. The entrĂ©e has not yet been served. Your date’s idea of enlightened conversation is who will be in the final four…you aren’t into sports and starting to not be into him either! He knows the weekly television schedule by heart….you haven’t sat through a movie or television show in months because you do fund raisers and volunteer at the local hospice. He says, “Volunteering is a waste of time because you can’t help ‘those people’ anyway.” You look at your watch; see that it’s only been 15 minutes since you last looked at it the last time and wonder how long it is before you can discreetly remove yourself from the situation. Been there? Now you wonder why you didn’t go out with that guy you were instant messaging through your free dating site.

Now imagine a first date with someone you met through a free dating site and have been instant messaging with and exchanging emails with for quite awhile. First, you don’t need to be introduced. You already know him. You are sitting in an Italian pizzaria enjoying a fabulous meal because you both know that the other’s favorite is Italian. The conversation flows easily as you discuss common interests. He is an avid reader and loves history just like you do. You happily discuss the volunteer work that each of you is involved in. You look at your watch and discover that it is late…very late…boy has time flown by!

There is an immense difference between a well meaning friend “setting you up” and choosing a man for yourself through a free online dating service who shares your interests and tastes, isn’t there? Now which one would you rather be with?
